Anhingas
The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), often called the “snakebird,” is a striking waterbird found throughout the warmer regions of the Americas. It gets its nickname from its long, slender neck, which often appears snake-like when it swims with only its head above water. Unlike many water birds, the anhinga’s feathers are not fully waterproof, allowing it to dive easily and pursue fish underwater with speed and agility. After hunting, it can often be seen perched with wings spread wide, drying in the sun. Sleek, dark, and elegant, the anhinga is a fascinating example of adaptation, blending both grace and practicality in its wetland habitat.
