Faith-Based Nature Learning for Kids: Our Mission and Story Behind Benevolent Discovery™
We are Kelly and John Wilson — educators, published children’s book authors, and professional wildlife photographers. Through Benevolent Mission LLC, we bring together early childhood development, real-world field observation, and storytelling to create meaningful, faith-inspired nature study programs for homeschool families.
Through decades of fieldwork, quiet observation, and countless hours spent photographing wildlife, we have come to see nature not only as beautiful, but as a reflection of God’s creation — filled with order, purpose, and detail that invites both curiosity and reverence.
Why We Created Benevolent Discovery™ — A Response to How Children Learn Today
Today’s children are growing up in a world that moves faster than their ability to process it. The average child now spends 4–7 hours a day on screens, while studies show attention spans are declining and diagnoses of attention-related challenges continue to rise. At the same time, unstructured outdoor play has dropped dramatically — replaced by schedules, devices, and passive entertainment.
The foundation of our curriculum, Benevolent Discovery™, was born from a shared belief that children learn best when they are invited to slow down, observe carefully, and connect meaningfully with the world around them. This creates space for genuine connection between you and your and child.
Why a Hands-On Learning Kit Is More Effective Than Lessons Alone
While lessons alone can teach concepts, we believe the Benevolent Discovery™ Kit transforms learning into a complete, hands-on experience. By combining the curriculum with thoughtfully chosen tools — like binoculars, art materials, and tactile elements —children are invited to actively explore rather than passively absorb information. This all-in-one approach removes the burden from parents to gather materials and creates a seamless, engaging rhythm that fits naturally into family life.
Bringing Nature-Based Learning Home for Families Through Real Wildlife and Meaningful Discovery
Many families don’t have the opportunity to spend hours in wetlands, along coastlines, or in quiet natural habitats. Using real wildlife imagery, thoughtful storytelling, and developmentally sound educational designs, we are honored to share what we’ve seen, what we’ve learned, and what we continue to discover.
At the heart of our work is a deep appreciation for creation, learning, and connection. We approach education with gratitude and care, honoring the beauty and order found in the natural world and the responsibility we share to protect it.
